What You’ll Learn
If you’ve been struggling to find a way to talk to him about what’s going on, then maybe the real issue is that you’re not clear yourself.
Catherine tells us that we’ve got to get clear in our own head first. We’ve got to know what it is that we really need from our partners.
“If you try to communicate from a place of frustration and stress and confusion, it’s not going to come out clearly, and they’re not going to receive it clearly. So the most important thing is to get clear with yourself first, what you need to say, feel confident about what you need to say, and then communicate it,” she says.
Because these conversations can be so tough, it helps to practice first. Avoid making it about him. Talk about how you’re experiencing the relationship and what you think could help.
He may take it as criticism, no matter how carefully you say it. You may need to step back. You can avoid taking on his pain by “getting that strong, connective relationship with yourself and being so clear that you know you’re doing the best you can. You know you’re making the right decision for your heart.”
Catherine also discusses whether every relationship can indeed be saved. She believes that relationships are about love, which includes honesty, respect, and integrity, so you want to look at whether those elements are still present in your relationship.
What you shouldn’t do is make any decision based on fear. “To stay in a relationship from fear of the uncertainty,” Catherine explains, “you’re literally making a choice to hold yourself back.”
If you feel that you need extra guidance, Catherine offers a program she developed called the HEALTHY Path, which helps take you step-by-step through the process of figuring out how to make your relationship work again or deciding to end things with honesty and respect.
