In the 20th Century:
Valentine’s Day celebrates couples.
In the 21st Century:
Valentine’s Day celebrates love.
I was a pimply awkward high schooler, and I was dreading the period before lunch.
That was when the roses would be delivered.
My high school was running a Valentine’s Day fundraiser. For a dollar you could buy a rose for your crush. It would get passed out right before lunch.
The most popular girls would end up with a desk full of roses. The least popular would get nothing. EVERYONE could see.
A classmate leaned towards me, pointing at my bare desk. “Guess no one loves you!” he cackled.
The worst part?
I agreed with him.
No one loved me. I didn’t have a secret admirer on Valentine’s Day. What more proof did I need?
I am so glad that part of my life is over! What was I THINKING?
Valentine’s Day doesn’t exist to shame people who aren’t part of a couple.
It exists to celebrate love.
Whether your loved ones are friends or family or pets or plants or your community, your love makes a difference in this world.
It’s not about who loves you – it’s about who you love.
And the more you love, the more gorgeous and rich and meaningful your life is.
