In the 19th Century:
Love comes to you.
In the 21st Century:
You go to love.
Up until about a hundred years ago, young women waited at home for love to come calling – quite literally!
Gentlemen suitors would come to their house in hopes of gaining an audience. They’d sit and sip tea in the company of a chaperone.
That all changed by the end of the First World War.
Young men and women flooded into the cities, hoping to find employment. Without chaperones or a sitting room to host guests, they mingled in the streets. Dating culture as we know it was born.
And yet you’ll still find mountains of dating advice recommending that women sit back and let men pursue them.
Do we REALLY want to turn the clock back to Victorian times? (Would you swap hoodies and yoga pants for those voluminous skirts? Not me!)
If you sit back and wait for men to pursue you, all you do is limit your choices to guys who like to pursue (cough, players).
All the shy sweet guys who are nervous about making a move are off the list.
Do you really want to pick among the limited number of men who’d make a move on you?
Or would YOU rather be the one narrowing the field by picking the men who catch your eye?
When you spot someone amazing, don’t sit back and hope he’ll see you. Seize the day! Make like your sassy flapper sisters and invite him to do something fun with you.
P.S. Wish he’d ask you out already?
